Santarém is a Portuguese city, capital of the District of Santarém (3rd largest Portuguese district), located in the province of Ribatejo and in the statistical region of Alentejo and in the statistical sub-region of Lezíria do Tejo; it continues, however, to be part of the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo Regional Coordination and Development Commission, with 29,929 inhabitants in its urban perimeter (2012).
The inhabitants of Santarém are called "Escalabitanos" or "Santarenos".
The Tagus River and the fertile plain of Lezíria, which surround the Santarém plateau, determined the settlement of the place since remote times. Currently in Santarém d the Temples built between the 13th and 15th centuries, which give it the epithet of “ Capital of the Gothic ” Portuguese.
